COURSE OVERVIEW

The School of Education offers exciting and rewarding, career focused qualifications in the fields of Education and Journalism.

Our qualification in Educare equips you to deal with many of the difficult social challenges that our younger generation are faced with. This programme provides you with the opportunity to enrich children’s lives and also to advance your knowledge in important areas such as HIV/Aids, Trauma Management, etc. So if you enjoy working with children and want to make a positive impact in their lives, our qualification in Educare is the right choice. Also, our qualification in Journalism gives you access to many rewarding and challenging career opportunities in the rapidly changing and dynamic media industry. Our objective is to produce quality graduates who will become part of South Africa’s exciting media industry.

NATIONAL ‘N’ DIPLOMA EDUCARE

If you enjoy working with children and shaping young minds, then this should be a suitable career for you. If you have a passion for children’s education and psychology and are excited about creating interesting, stimulating, fun activities for children, then this field is just the right one for you. This qualification will equip you to facilitate the all-round development of young children in a manner that is sensitive to culture and individual needs (including special needs) and enable you to provide quality early childhood development.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS,DURATION AND NOTES

All national certificates and national ‘N’ diplomas are issued by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).

Admission requirements

National Senior Certificate/Grade 12/N3 Certificate/NCV Level 4 Certificate/ABET Level 4 Certificate.

The minimum duration for Theoretical Studies is two years and 18 months’ work integrated learning (WIL) to satisfy the requirements of the National ‘N’ Diploma.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE JOURNALISM

Journalists play a vital social role in reporting news and conveying informed opinions on topics ranging from politics to celebrities. Journalists work in a variety of settings, from the comfort of their office to potentially dangerous field locations such as war zones.

Journalism programmes teach the principles and techniques of writing, editing and reporting. Learners are taught to analyse media topics and write clearly about them. To build research skills, they could be required to investigate topics in foreign affairs and prepare scripts for news shows.

  1. Perform journalism-related tasks and generate journalistic material in an editorial environment.
  2. Contribute to information distribution regarding HIV/Aids in the workplace.
  3. Present journalistic story ideas.
  4. Write/present/sign for a wide range of contexts.
  5. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of role and responsibility of local government in South Africa.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of stress to apply strategies to achieve success.
  7. Optimal stress levels in personal and work situations.

All certification done through the MICT Seta.

Assessment through a Portfolio of Evidence submission.
