Empowering the nation through education

Information Technology

COURSE OVERVIEW

Computing and Computer Technology are part of just about everything that touches our lives – from the cars we drive to the movies we watch, to the ways businesses and governments deal with us.

Understanding different dimensions of computing is part of the necessary skill set for an educated person in the 21st century. Whether you want to be a scientist, develop the latest computer application, or know what it really means when someone says “it was a computer error”, studying computing will provide you with valuable knowledge.

Computing is a discipline that offers rewarding and challenging possibilities for a large segment of people, regardless of their interests. Computing requires and develops capabilities in solving deep, multi-dimensional problems requiring imagination and sensitivity to a variety of concerns.

Computing drives innovation in the sciences and also in engineering, business, education and in almost every sector imaginable.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY END-USER COMPUTING

The qualification provides a framework for leaders to develop skills that will enable them to become competent in end-user computing skills. It introduces theoretical concepts of End-user Computing and requires its application to develop a range of skills that will enable learners to be better informed workers in their chosen industry. It is intended to empower learners to acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and values required to operate confidently in the end-user computing environment in the southern African community and to respond to the challenges of the economic environment.

All learners who complete the programme and are deemed competent for this qualification will receive certification from the MICT Seta.

FURTHER EDUCATION and TRAINING: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Most businesses and organisations rely heavily on computers in order to function efficiently and effectively. For this they need to have skilled and competent technical support people to ensure that all systems function properly at all times. Technicians are people who install, diagnose problems, repair, maintain and upgrade a wide variety of computer and supporting equipment. Being a computer technician involves having the knowledge of how to build an office computer from scratch, develop problem solving techniques, run tests and diagnostics, technical support and installations.

COURSE MODULE OUTCOMES LEVEL
National Certificate in Information Technology: Technical Support A learner will be able to:
  1. Communicate effectively with fellow IT staff and users of information systems.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of different types of computer systems and the use of computer technology in business.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of problem solving techniques and how to apply them in a technical environment.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of computer technology principles.
  5. Select and use materials and equipment safely for technological purposes.
  6. Work effectively as a team member within a support team.
  7. Carry out, under supervision, a smallsized task to demonstrate knowledge of techniques and skills needed in one or more of the following areas of majoring/specialisation:
    • Hardware and infrastructure support for personal computers
    • Hardware and infrastructure support for MS Office products.
    • Data communications and network support.

FURTHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT

Computer programmers create, modify and test the forms, scripts and code that tell the computer what to do. They serve as the link between the operator and the computer. The work of computer programmers is both demanding and rewarding. In general terms, they are people who write programmes for specific purposes or needs, whether it is to create a virtual reality game or programme appliance, to control machinery or to programme a company’s telephonic system.

The work of computer programmers involves researching and documenting computer users’ requirements, analysing the objectives and problems specified by the systems analyst, and determining what steps need to be taken and in what order, then translating these steps into computer language demands.
